There is a critical shortage of blood platelets in East Texas. Hospitals need to keep supplies up because there are typically more traffic accidents during the holiday season.
The Blood Center East Texas is urging people to donate blood so that hospitals can be ready for the many emergencies that occur this time of year. Blood donations of any kind are welcome. But, platelets are the biggest need right now.
Theresa Fain, a technical services manager said, "Platelets are always needed because they have a shorter expiration date, it's only good for five days. You never know from five minutes to the next if you're going to be the one that needs that unit of blood."
The blood center is also in desperate need of type O-Negative blood, which is also critically low right now.
The Blood Center East Texas is located off University Drive in Nacogdoches. The center will be open Friday until 3:00 p.m. Beginning January 3rd the center will also have new hours.
