NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A series of burglaries has law enforcement urging residents to lock up. This holiday weekend, seven burglaries were reported in Nacogdoches County.
Sergeant John Wayne Valdez, with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office, has worked in law enforcement for 30 years and said burglars tend to feast during the holiday season.
"The holiday season is in full swing and we are starting to see an increase in burglaries," said Valdez.
Valdez said there were three residential burglaries reported yesterday in the county alone, which is a high number for weekend activity. He said the increase is due to people traveling in and out of town.
He further explained that during the holidays, burglars get desperate, and vacant homes are just as appealing as unattended homes.
"Burglars will actually go into vacant homes and rip the copper out of the walls," Valdez said.
In fact, that is exactly what happened to one home in Cushing. According to the daily activity report, nearly $5,000 worth of copper wiring was stolen from a house located at 9200 North FM 225.
In addition to residences, businesses were also targeted. The Pike Saw and Tool Company, located in the 2500 block of Northwest Stalling Drive, was burglarized.
"A good alarm system is the first step in protecting your property. I suggest investing in a system that has a timer and will turn your porch light on and off," Valdez said.
If your planning on doing some holiday traveling, let neighbors know about your travel plans so that they can watch over your house. Valdez said residents can also call the sheriff's department and request for deputies to patrol their property.
