LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - State officials from Austin were in Lufkin Tuesday afternoon to announce that funding through the State Water Implementation Fund For Texas (SWIFT) was now available for rural East Texas.
Senator Robert Nichols and State Representative Trent Ashby were also on hand for the announcement.
Officials with the Water Development Board said the funding will allow for Texas to have a stable water system for the next 50 years. The funding was approved at the last legislative session in Austin and frees up $2 billion.
"The thing about SWIFT and House Bill 4 is that it helps the rest of the state of Texas, take their eyes off of East Texas water, by allowing them to develop ways locally to go about funding their projects within their territory, within their region," Ashby said.
