HOUSTON, TX (KTRE) - The Houston County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's help in finding the person or people responsible for damaging several head stones and grave markers in the McCarter Cemetery near Grapeland.

The cemetery is located in the 1200 block of County Road 1640. According to a press release, the vandalism occurred sometime between Dec. 3 and Dec. 9.

"They did a couple of thousand dollars worth of damage," said Chief Deputy G.P. Shearer.

Shearer said there is an active investigation in the area and they are trying to identify any possible suspects.

The cemetery is one of the oldest in the county. The site pre-dates the statehood of Texas. The first known grave was in 1834.

Tom Streetman is on the board that oversees operations at the site and said the site of vandalism is hard to deal with.

"We will have to call family members and let them know their family members that their marker was damaged," Streetman said.  "Here it is Christmas and you don't want to hear that kind of news during the holidays."

Anyone with any information about this case is urged to call the Houston County Sheriff's Office at (936) 544-2862.
