CENTER, TX (KTRE) - After over a year without a medical facility, Center residents will soon have an emergency room to go to.

Nacogdoches Medical Center opened the doors of its new Center Emergency and Diagnostic Imaging Facility for a select few Thursday afternoon.

"What this community has been without for over a year now, they now have in our facility," said Nacogdoches Medical Center's COO Clay Farell.

In July of 2013, the Shelby Regional Medical Center was shut down after the owner Tariq Mahood said the facility lost Medicaid and Medicare funding.

Last January, Nacogdoches Medical Center stepped in and announced they would be building a facility in the area. The broke ground in February.

"I was born in that facility, so I absolutely understand [why it hurt]," said Emergency Room Director Tammy Hanson. "Being in such a rural area, acute care is greatly needed. We have an opportunity to bring something to Shelby County that they have never seen before."

The facility has seven full time beds and one trauma room. The other half of the facility will allow for Shelby County residents to have out-patient test ran without driving to Nacogdoches. The facility has around 500 pieces of medical equipment. The facility will accommodate 40 employees.

"We have an extremely competent nursing staff, extremely competent physician staff," Hanson said. "It was a very difficult selective process."

Farell said the hospital expects to see between 15 and 20 people a day in the emergency room, which equals out to between 15,000 and 18,000 people for the year.

"Ninety percent of the patients that walk into an emergency room walk out. So this will be able to treat the majority of their medical needs," Farell said.

The facility will officially open on Monday Dec. 22 at 8 a.m. The ER will be open 24 hours a day and the imaging center will be open during normal business hours. The facility is located at the intersection of Loop 500 and Highway 96 in Center.
