Second San Augustine Co. oil field theft suspect arrested

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A second suspect in a string of oil field thefts in San Augustine County has been arrested.

Roy Marshall, 37 of San Augustine, was arrested in Angelina County Saturday. The arrest was confirmed by Game Warden Phillip Wood, but he did not know the exact details behind the arrest.

Marshall was one of three suspects wanted in a theft ring that stole over $26,000 of oil and various pieces of equipment from well sites around San Augustine County earlier this month.

On Dec. 12, Joshua Bearden, 25, of San Augustine was arrested by the San Augustine Co. Sheriff's Office. Bearden was charged with theft between $1,500 and $120,000 as well as engaging in organized criminal activity. Marshall has the same charges against him.

Deputy Tammy Fountain with the San Augustine County Sheriff's Office said that Bearden and numerous other suspects have been hitting oil and gas drill sites all over San Augustine County. Fountain said, all total, eight companies have had their sites targeted, and each company has had multiple sites hit by the suspects.

Several hundred gallons of oil and numerous batteries have already been recovered, according to San Augustine County Chief Deputy Gary Cunningham.

Fountain said based on evidence they have already gathered in the case, the San Augustine County Sheriff's Office sought and obtained arrest warrants for two other men, who are still at large. The other suspects in the theft ring include: Russell Dale Smith Jr. 20, and Jeremy Bradford Sowell, 21, both of Hemphill.
