ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

After a preliminary investigation, the Angelina County Sheriff's Office has determined that the married couple found dead in the yard of a residence on Willie Nerren Road probably involved in a shootout with each other.

Robin Chris Turney, 58, and Sharon Turney, 59, were both found dead in the back yard of a residence in the 1500 block of Willie Nerren Road Friday morning. Both people were lying face down and had apparent gunshot wounds.

“It appears they were the only ones there,” said Captain Alton Lenderman with the Angelina County Sheriff's Office. “Gunshots were exchanged between the two.”

Lenderman said it appears as though there were no witnesses.

“Everybody involved is deceased, so there is no one to prosecute,” Lenderman said. “We may never know what happened in this confrontation.”

At this point, ACSO investigators do not feel like the incident was a double suicide, and they are trying to rule out the possibility of any third-party involvement, Lenderman said.

Captain Alton Lenderman with the Angelina County Sheriff's Office said that both people died from multiple gunshot wounds. He said that it appears as though the couple first got into a struggle or a confrontation inside the house.

Then gunshots were exchanged, and the Turneys wound up in the back yard, Lenderman said. The guns found at the scene were the weapons the Turneys were shot with, Lenderman said.

Lenderman said it was public knowledge that the couple was having marital problems.

It will be at least six weeks before Angelina County Sheriff's Office investigators will get the final autopsy reports back, Lenderman.

The initial 911 call came in at 7:22 a.m. Friday after the bodies of a man and a woman were found in the yard of the home on Willie Nerren Road.

According to KTRE's previous report, Lenderman said the 911 came in after a neighbor spotted car associated with that home in the ditch on Willie Nerren Road. The person called 911 after he or she saw a woman's purse in the abandoned car and became concerned.

When ACSO deputies went out to the home to do a welfare check, they found the Turneys' bodies lying face down in the yard. Lenderman said both people had apparent gunshot wounds.
