JASPER COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Texas Parks & Wildlife Department officials say they are expecting over 1,000 people to take part in a growing trend a New Year's Day hike through a state park.

They say the trend, called first day hikes, has taken off as a way to get people on a healthy path to start the new year.

On Monday, the department said more than 1,500 people took in the 2014 New Year's Day hikes in nearly 60 state parks in Texas.

The nearest first day hike to Lufkin is at Martin Dies, Jr. Park in Jasper County. Participants can join a ranger for a run through the 2.2 mile long Slough Trail starting at 3 p.m.
