Lufkin PD sees rise in DWI incidents

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -  The holidays call for celebration, family and fireworks, and for most, with celebration comes drinking.

"People are spending time with family, having get-togethers, and different parties," said Lt.Shurley, of the Lufkin Police Department.

East Texas has seen a rise in drivers under the influence.  Lufkin Police Department says it goes hand in hand with the holiday season every year.

"The new year is coming up,"said Shurley.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 40 percent of deaths during Christmas and new year holidays involve drunk drivers.

"It's really simple, and we say this every year all the time. If you're going to drink, just have someone there sober to drive," said Shurley.

Police reported four major accidents and two reckless drivers in the Lufkin and Nacogdoches areas just yesterday.

"Lawyer's fees and all that that go along with it,"said Shurley.

According to both Lufkin and Nacogdoches police reports, the drunk holiday cruising is already in effect.  The past days arrests included Gary Breland who rolled over his truck and Javier Vargas who took police on a chase after consuming a 30-pack.

"There are always options, you just have to be responsible,"said Shurley.

DPS is in the middle of a 15 day increase in DWI patrol.  This period will last through the new year holiday. Shurley says the consequences for drunk driving can all be avoided.
