More women in East Texas getting CHL certified

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Packing heat and shooting guns isn't just a boy's club anymore. An increasing amount of women are getting Concealed Handgun Licenses.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the number of women obtaining their CHLs nearly doubled from 2012 to 2013 and has continued to increase.

Licensed CHL instructor Sandra Feazell has seen the increase first hand in her own classes.

"We hold different types of classes with different groups of people and usually half the class is women," said Feazell. "I think this is going in a very positive direction. Women are at the front of many different things nowadays. This is a very different world than the 1950's. They're no relying on men to protect them, they're going out and learning how to do it on their own."

According to Feazell, the biggest reason more women are getting their CHLs is for self-protection.

"Overall I think the fact is we're living in an unsafe world and people want to protect themselves," she said. "Women themselves want this license strictly so they will feel safe. They are not wanting to rely on anyone else they are wanting to be self sufficient

Feazell says the most important thing women can do before getting their CHLs is to learn how to use a gun safely. Her classes teach many things women need to know including dispute resolution, how to keep guns safe around children, and more.

Women of all ages, professions, relationship statuses, and walks of life are getting their licenses for the same reasons according to Feazell: No matter who they are or where they come from, all women want to feel protected.
