Parties settle in San Augustine Co. church case

SAN AUGUSTINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - The three-year long issue of a San Augustine County church has been settled.

Following a criminal trial and civil lawsuit, Margie Coffee's non-profit organization has possession of Gloryland Pentecostal Church.

As part of the settlement, both sides agree to dismiss counterclaims against each other.

Coffee was indicted in 2013 after Betty Clark alleged she and two others, Terry Bishop and Ethel Husband, fraudulently changed the church deed.

Clark was the treasurer of the church, and Coffee accused her of leaving the church and refusing to give them back the deed.

Coffee was found not guilty of fraud last year. The state then dropped the charges against Bishop and Husband.

Coffee said the plan now is to sell the church property.

Although an agreement has been made Clark said “she is considering taking the matter to an appeals court.”
