Proud Of East Texas: Johnny Lee

Johnny Lee is one of the top country music stars featured at The Texas Country Music Hall Of Fame in Carthage. When Lee was growing up, it wasn't country music that Lee sang and played. Ricky Nelson and Elvis were his heroes.

When Lee completed his tour of duty in Vietnam, he joined a musical trio that had to learn to play country music to get the first job they were offered. Although Lee soon became a favorite at Mickey Gilley's in Houston and had recorded a few songs, it was his role in the John Travolta movie, "Urban Cowboy", that catapulted him into stardom.

Lee's rendition of the title song was played constantly throughout the movie and both the movie an the song were instant hits. In spite of later successes, Johnny Lee, Texas Country Music Hall Of Famer, will forever be known as "The Urban Cowboy".
