Nacogdoches Co. JP identifies 4-year-old girl killed by falling tree

NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A memorial service for the 4-year-old Nacogdoches County girl who died when a tree fell on her Sunday is scheduled for Friday.

Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Kerry Don Williamson confirmed that the little girl's name was Kaitlyn Grace Moorehead.

According to the Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, Kaitlyn's memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday at the North Street Church of Christ. A private family interment will take place at the Sunset Memorial Park.

Kaitlyn died the day before her fifth birthday. A previous East Texas News story stated that Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to a home on Green Mountain Road at about 1 p.m. in reference to a report that a tree had fallen on a child.

When the deputies arrived on the scene, they found Kaitlyn's father trying to revive her. A deputy drove the ambulance to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital while EMS personnel continued their efforts to save the little girl's life.

Kaitlyn died as a result of her injuries a short time later.

A preliminary investigation shows that family members were burning around three dead pine trees. The fire apparently jumped a fire line that family members had made. One of the family members went outside to contain the fire, and Kaitlyn followed outside. During this time, without any warning, a pine tree fell and struck the little girl.

Memorial donations on Kaitlyn's behalf should be sent to St. Jude's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105. Donations can also be made via the St. Jude's Website.
