NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - For the first time in five years, Nacogdoches High School has a parent teacher association.
Leaders are offering a unique incentive to join the PTA - money.
The PTA's leadership is using the lure of winning cash to build a membership from nothing to something.
"We teamed up with the Nacogdoches Jaycees," said Leisha Bryant, the president of the NHS PTA. They were able to help us underwrite a program where we can say, 'You know it pays. We will give you back for your membership.'"
A $10 membership gives the member one chance to win $250. Additional chances to win come each time a member participates in a school or community function.
"If you join your name goes in the hat for a drawing to win," Bryant said. "A teacher, a student, and a community member or parent will win $250 at the end of the year."
For some members an incentive isn't necessary.
Teachers use PTA as a communication tool.
"It lets teachers know that parents are there and available and want to be involved in their children's lives, and they're partners in this education of their children," said Deann Knox, the GEAR up coordinator and a teacher at NHS.
Parents say PTA keeps them connected to their high school student.
"What's going on in school. How to get things done," said Randlia Solice, a parent. "I think it's a go to source for all parents."
So the investment comes with a return, but no one will argue bonus points are always helpful.
Details on how to join and win chances on the cash can be found on the Nacogdoches ISD Website.
