DPS identifies man killed by log truck in Jasper Co.

JASPER COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A man died after he was struck by a log truck on US Highway 96 in Jasper County early Wednesday morning.

Jasper County Sheriff Mitchell Newman said that the auto-pedestrian accident occurred at approximately 7 a.m. on US Highway in Jasper County about two miles south of Jasper.

According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2013 log truck was traveling south on Highway 96 in the inside lane. For an unknown reason, man ran out in front of the 18-wheeler and was struck and killed. The man was identified as Jody Michael Vaughn, 26, of Shelbyville, according to Trooper Stephanie Davis, a DPS spokeswoman. 

Judge Freddie Miller pronounced Vaughn dead at the scene of the accident.

“The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured, but visibly shaken after the crash. The pedestrian was a 26 year old man from Shelbyville, Texas,” the press release stated.

The accident is still under investigation. The press release stated that DPS troopers are trying to uncover a possible reason why the pedestrian ran in front of the truck.
