Naranjo Museum celebrating Mars Rover accomplishment

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The Naranjo Museum of Natural History is giving East Texans a chance to celebrate a landmark event.

Opportunity, the Mars rover, will celebrate 10 years on Mars this Saturday. To celebrate the occasion the museum will be hosting a special birthday bash on Jan.23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Opportunity was made to last 90 days," said Dr. Neal Naranjo. "It just shows how NASA can engineer something. Ten years later he is still running. He has taken 178,000 photos. He's found water on Mars and we are just thrilled."

The celebration will let guest take a look at objects from outer space as well as a full scale model of the rover that was donated by NASA.

Naranjo said the exhibit is booked with groups through next week.
