LONGVIEW, TX (KTRE) - The Longview Police Department says their lobby is closed following a shooting Thursday night. The shooting happened about 6:30 p.m. at the police station on Cotton Street.
Officer Kristie Brian said that a woman entered the lobby of the police department on Thursday evening. She picked up the red assistance phone in the lobby, and called for police help. When officers entered the lobby, Brian said, the woman was wielding a weapon, and was making threatening movements toward the officers. Brian would not confirm the type of weapon the individual was using. The woman was then shot by police.
The woman was transported to Good Shepherd Medical Center, according to police, where she was pronounced dead by a justice of the peace.
On their own social media sites just after the incident occurred, the department posted, "Longview Police are investigating a shooting that occurred in the Police Department lobby. More information will be released further in the evening."
When our reporters arrived at the scene, they said the activity was focused on the entrance on the side of the building facing the municipal court building. A police investigations unit pulled up to the entrance. Authorities were seen coming and going from the scene, which was, and continues to be, taped off. Mayor Jay Dean said earlier this evening that he had been told that a woman entered the police department wielding a knife, but that he was waiting for that to be confirmed.
The Texas Rangers are on the scene and are now leading the investigation.
