LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Angelina County Sheriff's office deputies arrested a 30-year-old woman on outstanding warrant on Friday from the Waco Police Department in connection to allegations that she was going door to door with a 5-year-old child collecting money for a bogus school fund raiser.
Laci Jean Wardell, of Lufkin, is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on a third-degree felony charge of exploitation of a child. No bail has been set at this time.
Sgt. Patrick Swanton of the Waco Police Department said they worked the initial case on Jan. 5. Waco PD officers responded to a call about a suspicious person going door to door soliciting.
Eventually, they located Wardell. She had a 5-year-old child with her, and she had been going door to door to collect money for a school fund raiser. However, the Waco Police officers learned that the school in question wasn't having a fund raiser.
Wardell was arrested on Jan. 4 for outstanding traffic warrants and a theft by check warrant out of Falls County, Swanton said. The child was released into the custody of an adult.
After a Waco PD detective got this Case, he or she determined that Wardell wasn't collecting the money for a school money and was keeping the money.
The Waco Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for Wardell and tried to re-interview her, but they learned that she had gone to the Lufkin area.
Wardell will be extradited to Waco, Swanton said.
