JASPER COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A 73-year-old Newton man has died as a result of injuries he suffered in a two-vehicle wreck that occurred on US Highway 96 near Kirbyville on Jan. 23.

Joseph Burnett died Monday morning at Jasper Memorial Hospital.

“Troopers are actively investigating this fatal crash,” said Trooper Stephanie Davis, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. “At this time, it is premature to conclude if any further charges will be filed until all evidence has been collected and analyzed by the investigating trooper.”

According to a press release, the two-vehicle accident occurred at approximately 1:35 p.m. on Monday at the intersection of Highway 96 and County Road 443 in Jasper County. The wreck was about two miles north of Kirbyville.

A 2003 Mazda pickup driven by Burnett was traveling northbound on Highway 96 when he slowed down to make a right turn onto CR 443, according to the press release. His truck was struck from behind by a 2013 Chevrolet driven by Shelly Chapman, 46, of Groves.

Burnett was transported by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital. Groves, who had non-life-threatening injuries was also taken to the same hospital.

Chapman was given a ticket for failure to control speed.
