NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

The 74-year-old Nacogdoches man who died after he was struck by a pickup when he tried to cross North Street Tuesday night was a resident of the nearby Austin Place Apartments.

Vernis Davis' friends told Nacogdoches Police officers that he was crossing the street to get himself something to eat.

Although Davis was often seen in a wheelchair, he was using a walker Tuesday night. He got more than half way across North Street when he was struck by a 2003 Chevrolet pickup driven by Timothy Taylor, 34, of Nacogdoches at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Davis frequently bought beverages at the Chevron convenience store located next door to Austin Place Apartments.

Davis was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

No charges have been filed against Taylor.
