CUSHING, TX (KTRE) - Cushing ISD held a grand opening tonight for the Denny-Sides Coliseum, the highly anticipated basketball facility.
With property taxes from the Sacul biomass plant and a $7 million bond passed by the school board, Cushing ISD was able to build the $4 million state-of-the-art stadium. The bond money also went towards a bus port and other school renovations.
The coliseum has many features Cushing's previous stadium did not have, including a high-tech scoreboard, aerial seating, and wheelchair and handicap accessible seating areas.
Cushing held a series of events to kick off the grand opening of the gym, starting with a spaghetti dinner for the boys and girls' basketball teams last night. The players were able to get a look at the new stadium the night before their games so they wouldn't be overwhelmed and they were amazed by how looked.
"Wow, I couldn't believe how nice it was," said boys varsity point guard DeRodney Thomas.
"When I first walked in here, I was so excited to see how incredible this was," said girls varsity point guard Kayla Moore.
Cushing also held a ribbon cutting ceremony this morning, followed by a pep rally.
Both the boys and girls teams took on Neches tonight. Before tip-off, there was ceremony held for former coaches and the last living member of the 1936 State Champion Basketball Team.
