East Texans mark start of Lent on Ash Wednesday

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Hundreds gathered this evening at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lufkin.  It was filled with those ready to begin the forty days of Lent until Easter.

"Today is Ash Wednesday, it marks the beginning of the forty days of preparation for the celebration of the Lord's passion," said Father Gavin Vaverek.

Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, and other denominations received the gift of the ash cross Wednesday night. Father Vaverek said he would like the members to remember why they participate in Ash Wednesday.

"We give up a little something to remember what He did for us first," Vaverek said.

Members of St. Patrick's made sure to bless their babies as well.  Some had already decided on some sweet penances.

"Sweet tea since I'm a lover of sweet tea," said a member.

"I give up desserts during lent," Vaverek said.

Most importantly, the members are ready to better themselves, repent, and remember.
