Nacogdoches woman killed in hit and run incident

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

A Nacogdoches woman, identified as 54-year-old Matilde Cruz, is dead after she was struck by a truck around 6:33 p.m. Thursday. 

According to officials, she was walking southbound near the 200 block of North Sanders with her husband when a southbound pick-up truck hit her and fled down Evelyn Street.   

The suspect's description was broadcast by radio to all Nacogdoches police.  

The suspect, 21-year-old Justin Laird of Nacogdoches, was stopped at 6:41 p.m., eight minutes later on Starr Ave. and Raguet Street.  The damages to his vehicle matched with the incident.  Laird has been charged with failure to stop and render aid with a fatality, a second degree felony.

Cruz was taken to Nacogdoches Memorial by ambulance and was pronounced dead at 7:24 p.m.
