LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A little snow didn't stop teens from bringing their sweet and unique dishes to be judged in the Angelina County Fair.
"Today, I made pumpkin cream cheese muffins," said Jackson Vier, a competitor.
Several breads came through the doors, and the kids told me what they thought their best ingredients were.
"Sugar. A lot of sugar! It's not nutritious, but it still taste good!" Jackson said.
There was one competitor who stood out from the rest. Owen Duren, a six-year-old boy, was competing for the first time He was the youngest to bring in a dish this year.
"I am showing my banana muffins," Owen said.
He and his competition got a chance to present their dishes, strawberries, and bananas topped the plates, but if you don't think Owen really knows what he brought to the table, you're wrong.
"Eggs, white sugar and brown sugar," Owen said.
The six year old was able to name all the ingredients with little help. He says his mother gave him very little help in preparing the dish.
"You get a mixing bowl and a hand mixer and put butter, eggs, white, sugar," Owen said.
Bananas aren't his favorites.
"Really ... ummm ... apples are my favorites!" Owen said.
He said he's happy with his product today, and maybe he'll try an apple pie next year.
Owen didn't place this year, but he said he plans to keep practicing his skills for future competitions.
