Ruling Could Cost LI Millions in Back Pay

Lufkin Industries could end up paying up to six million dollars in back pay to employees who slapped the company with a lawsuit more than a year ago.

Lufkin Industries plans to appeal a judge's decision that ruled in favor of about 700 employees who accused the company of racial discrimination.  Blacks and Hispanics were reportedly channeled into the company's foundry division, which has the harshest working conditions.  The lawsuit also alleged minorities were not provided with sufficient training and promotion opportunities, which resulted in lower pay.
