JACKSONVILLE – Brianna Brown's potential game-tying three pointer scraped the rim at the buzzer, leaving the Angelina College Lady Roadrunners with a season-ending 66-63 loss to the San Jacinto Lady Gators in Wednesday's Region XIV Tournament action in Jacksonville.
The Lady ‘Runners overcame a sluggish start and several double-digit deficits – San Jac opened the game with a 10-0 run – to take a 61-60 lead on Ceidra Coleman's jumper with 2:47 to play.
But Lady Gator Anika Notthingham scored five points over the final two minutes to lift San Jacinto into the next round against Trinity Valley.
Brown led AC with 16 points in her final game as a Lady Roadrunner; Ebony Story added 10 points and 10 rebounds; and Coleman and Malachi McQueen added nine points each in the loss. Sandy Rawls managed seven points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
Notthingham's 16 points led the Lady Gators; teammate Katelynn Wilson added 14 and Kendra Howard 11 for San Jac.
After struggling early, the Lady Roadrunners used a 13-2 run over the final minutes of the first half to trail by a single digit, 32-31, at the half. When the Lady Gator lead climbed to nine points in the second half, AC whittled it down to two points before finally taking a short-lived lead.
But missed shots on open looks prevented the Lady Roadrunners from building any more than a one-point lead the entire game.
The game marked the final appearance for sophomores Lisa Nealey, Brianna Brown, Ceidra Coleman, Sandy Rawl and Quiana Tucker.
AC ends the season with a 20-11 record.
