JASPER COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Court records revealed that the couple arrested in early February in connection to the death of an 85-year-old Jasper man have each been charged with murder.
Robert Mounts, 48, and Ashley Nicole Lewis, 29, were both charged with first-degree felony murder, according to court records. Each person's bail was set at $500,000.
Herbert W. Deaton was reported missing on Nov. 11, 2014 after family members could not get in touch with him.
Jasper authorities went to search for Deaton and found a dead body off of County Road 73, eight miles from Jasper. The body was identified as Deaton's, and the cause of death was ruled by an autopsy report as homicidal violence.
According to a previous East Texas News story, Mounts and Lewis were arrested in Terre Haute, Indiana in early February. They were originally arrested on outstanding Jasper County warrants for credit card abuse and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
“They have made a living out of conning,” said Jasper County Sheriff Mitchell Newman.
"He's wanted out of Maine also on a couple charges of indecency with a child," Newman said.
