TxDOT shutting down lanes on U.S. 59 to repair potholes caused by rain

ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (News Release) - TxDOT officials are closing southbound lanes in two different areas of construction in Angelina County due to potholes caused by excessive rain.

The outside southbound lane in the US 59/Loop 287 construction project near Spence Street is being closed Monday evening as well as the outside southbound lane of traffic in the Redland construction area just south of FM 2021.

Officials plan to repair the potholes caused by the excessive water once the rain has stopped.

“With the amount of rain we have had in the last few days, it only takes a crack in the pavement for excessive water to begin washing away the pavement which results in potholes,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer with the TxDOT Lufkin District. “Our project engineer believes these lanes of traffic could be closed up to 24 hours before they can be repaired, but that time frame is dependent on the weather.”

Motorists should be prepared to slow down on wet roads and be alert at all times, especially when water is over roadways.
