Nacogdoches declares March 10 "Ab Abernethy Day"

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - The Banita Creek Trail committee held a banquet to honor Dr. F.E. Abernethy, better known as "Ab."

The House and Senate passed a resolution to declare March 10th "Ab Abernethy Day."  He has been referred to as the "Trail Blazer of Nacogdoches" and is famous for his work on the Lanana Creek Trail.

"I'm impressed, and I'm so pleased that people are not only interested in the creek, but in me too. I love them for it because we're all working for the same thing. We're working for the children," said Abernethy.

Mayor Roger Van Horn presented Abernethy with the 'key to the city' and the Boy Scouts of America presented a tribute.

The Banita Creek Trail committee is raising funds to complete the trail which extends from Pearl to Powers Street.

"He has blazed these trails by himself, using a lot of his own money to do it. It was time to unite and help him and finish the project that he started years ago," said Diana Walker, chairman of the Banita Creek Trail Project.

There were over two hundred people in attendance.  All proceeds from the banquet will go directly to the Banita Creek Trail Beautification Project.
