TYLER COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

A Tyler County grand jury has indicted a Hillister man in the shooting death of a woman in connection to a deer lease dispute in October.

Tyler County Sheriff Chief Deputy Phil Ryan said the grand jury handed down the indictment for John McDowell on March 18. A district judge re-set his bond from $250,000 to $1 million and McDowell will be re-arrested, Ryan said.

According to authorities, McDowell shot and killed Melanie Shoemaker, 42, after she had gotten into an argument with him over a deer lease. She had brought a rifle to McDowell's home in Hillister. After the confrontation, Shoemaker left on a four-wheeler and McDowell followed her on County Road 4497 and authorities believe he shot her through the cheek with a pistol.
