LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - No students were injured when a car rear-ended a Lufkin ISD school bus near the intersection of Loop 287 and Keltys Road.
It appears as though Lufkin ISD Bus No. 21 was rear-ended shortly after it turned from Loop 36 (Keltys Road) to go on to Loop 287 North. The bus was rear-ended by a gold Dodge Neon.
About 17 elementary-age school children were still on the bus when the accident occurred.
Sheila Adams, a spokeswoman for Lufkin ISD, said that they are in the process of notifying the students' parents. The children will be taken to the district's transportation building, and parents will be able to pick up their kids there. Adams said if parents are unable to come pick up their kids, Lufkin ISD officials will make sure the children make it to their homes safely.
The driver of the Dodge Neon was identified as Kevin Lopez, 23, was arrested at the scene. Lopez was charged with driving without a license, and failure to control the speed of his vehicle.
Lopez was booked into the Angelina County Jail and is currently being held without bond.
Following the arrest traffic was still flowing pretty well on the loop.
In addition to the Lufkin Police Department, Lufkin firefighters, Lufkin EMS paramedics, and LISD personnel were all at the scene.
