LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The clean up continues Thursday night after a deadly bridge collapse on Interstate 35, north of Austin, in Salado, Texas.
Around 11 a.m. Thursday, a tractor-trailer rammed into an overpass sending beams hurtling down on unsuspecting drivers. One of them landed on a Arlington man in this pickup truck. He was killed and three others injured.
"This is an unfortunate incident where a truck driver struck an overpass," said Department of Public Safety spokesman Trooper D.L. Wilson. "It's a very sad situation. Our thoughts and prayer are with the families with those affect."
He adds that the investigation continues into this fatal crash.
Texas officials also said Thursday the fatal accident is a good reminder to Texas drive safely through work zones.
"Last year in work zones throughout Texas 146 people died in work zone related traffic incidents , way too many, one is way too many," said Trooper D.L. Wilson. "We need to get word out to the public to slow down in work zones and be safe and drive smart."
On Tuesday, TX-DOT officials in East Texas set up coned off part of North Timberland Drive for "work zone safety awareness weeks." The cones stand as a reminder of the 146 lives lost in highway work zones.
