Congressman Louie Gohmert responds to rumors of a possible presidential run

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - East Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert's office responded to rumors of a possible presidential run Thursday night.

Questions began to swirl over a 2016 presidential run after an interview with online publication, "The Hill."

In the article, Congressman Gohmert was asked about Senator Ted Cruz's presidential run and responded “I think he would be an outstanding president. However, I haven't ruled out an exploratory committee myself."

On Thursday, the congressman's office issued a statement clarify his remarks.

Gohmert's spokeswoman Kimberly Willingham said in an email to East Texas News, “Washington DC contains too many who do not recognize statements made with a figurative tongue in cheek, sometimes known as being ironic. To more completely describe his actual beliefs, Congressman Gohmert notes the Kennedy-Nixon debates created a line of demarcation beyond which television became the critical factor in being elected President which also meant there would be no more bald Presidents in his lifetime.”

Gohmert was elected to the House in 2004. Before being elected to Congress he served as a state district court judge and the chief justice on a state court of appeals.
