NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - If you can boil water, stir a pot, and be patient you can make home brewed beer, so says president of the Nacogdoches Brew Club Victor Galan.

Of course, he and other brew masters attempt to perfect the method, especially this time of year when memberships start selling fast for May's Spring Brewfest. East Texas got a peek into what goes on in member's garages, backyards, and kitchens when the brew is on.

“A lot of people think that home brewers are a bunch of slovenly guys who like to sit around and get drunk and stupid, and we're not,” Galan said.

When an alarm sounded, Galan said, “That's saying my water is at the right temperature.”

Instead, home beer brewing is a pretty sobering experience for Galan.

“For me the fun is really the experimenting with it,” Galan said. “And combining the different hops, combining the different yeast strains, changing the grain build, and making those little nuances and flavors that myself and my friends really enjoy."

Galan has gone from making two gallons of beer with a Mr. Beer Kit that his wife gave him years ago to storing kegs of beer in the front closet.

“An English special bitter that I made for Brewfest,” Galan said.

It's a hobby, craft, art, and science blended into a brewing revolution.

“And a lot of times we are kinda geeky at our meetings where we start talking about strains of yeast or kinds of hops or how much hops or what temperature was the water,” Galan said.

Change any step slightly and a brewmaster is likely to come up on something really good or disastrous.

“One can have a blowout,” Galan said with a laugh. “It literally blows the lid off your fermenter, and I've had to clean beer off my ceiling.”

The mistakes and accomplishments are shared with members who range from newbies to home-brewing veterans. Once a year, memberships are sold, as required by TABC, to allow passage into the Spring Brewfest.

“When one comes into the door we give you a small tasting glass,” Galan said. “We don't expect everyone to become avid brewers."

But if it does happen there's a guarantee someone will be raising a glass and saying “cheers.”

The Nacogdoches Brewfest is May 2 at 2 p.m. at the Nacogdoches Exposition Center.  Get your $25 membership at nacbrewclub.com now as they go fast and can't be sold the weekend of the event.

According to a club Facebook post, membership is good for one year or one afternoon of more beers to try then you can imagine. It's your option.
