ONALASKA, TX (KTRE) - An Onalaska man was arrested for criminal mischief on Wednesday in connection to allegations that he pirated electricity from his elderly neighbor.
James Barta is still being held in the Polk County Jail on a state-jail felony criminal mischief between $1,500 and $20,000. His bail has been set at $15,000.
"The elderly woman is on a fixed income and said her bill was already over $500 on the year," said Onalaska Police Chief Ron Gilbert. "We found that Barta dug a trench between his home and hers and ran an extension cord under the trailer and hooked up to her power line."
Gilbert said police officers went out to the Canyon Park subdivision to investigate Wednesday. He said they flipped the breaker box several times and saw Barta's power go off when his neighbor's electricity did.
