NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - For years, members of the Indian community would sell food at Sacred Heart's MultiCultural Festival and donate the proceeds to an East Texas charity. But this year they are raising awareness and donations for victims of the Nepal earthquake.

This is the 8th year for the Indian food booth. They put up signage to let folks know their meal would help people in their native India.

Along with the food, talking about the Nepal fund drive allowed people to interact with and appreciate other cultures.

"But this year we're not just collecting money,” said Dr. Kavita Vyas, a Nacogdoches-based Internist, ”but also clothing, shoes and other articles for people in Nepal."

Dr. Vyas says their local Nepal relief push also includes students collecting donations at Nacogdoches schools and at Stephen F. Austin State University.
