LUFKIN, TX (News Release) - Sunday, April 19, a white male wearing a gray AND1 brand T-shirt, black baseball cap, denim shorts, and white tennis shoes passed counterfeit money at a Lufkin gas station.
The suspect was a passenger in a black and gold late model Ford Expedition and paid for gas using fake ten and twenty dollar bills.
Video of the crime shows that the suspect has numerous tattoos on his arms and neck. Online at www.DETCS.tips and www.facebook.com/DETCS you can view portions of the videos.
The store clerk thought something was wrong with the money because of the way the paper felt in his hand. Two of the ten-dollar bills had the same serial number, and other bills were missing key security features, such as watermarks.
With the technology currently available to the public, criminals can produce authentic-looking counterfeit bills but, if you know the signs, fake US currency is easy to spot.
You can find information concerning the features of genuine Federal Reserve Notes online at www.secretservice.gov/know_your_money.shtml. If you doubt that a bill is genuine, contact your local police department.
