Power of Prayer: Finding Strength In the Prayers Of Others

Last August doctors told 77 year old Syble Burris she needed single by-pass surgery. Routine, but still serious surgery.

The active mother, grand and great grandmother, made it through the surgery. But a few days later infection set in. In the months to come, Ms. Burris would suffer complication after complication. Seizures, blood clots and lung problems were just the beginning.

"They called on a Saturday morning," remembers son Danny Burris, "about a quarter till seven and said what is your mother's feelings about life support."

During the next six months, Ms. Burris would be put on life support four times. The endurance of not knowing what would happen from one day to the next began to take its toll on the family. "The longevity of it became almost unbearable." says daughter in law Teresa Burris. "Because we would get called and say, this weekend we've put her on life support you got to come up. And I think the up and down, our emotions just felt as if we couldn't handle it anymore."

"You got to get strength from somewhere," says Danny, "we were still working and running by here then trying to take care of everything at home too. Yeah strength...you run out of your own pretty quick."

The Burris family had relied upon prayer from the start of this ordeal, but in those trying days they learned a lesson of the power in the prayers of others.

"It is so important for those people to continue to pray and not to give up," says Teresa. "They may not see the result. But you still don't give up. Just keep on and trust God for whatever He has in store. And I believe I could say that for all the family, that we just hung on to those prayers."

Six months after her journey Ms. Burris was finally able to go home. Taking with her a new perspective on prayer and faith that she hopes to pass on to her family. "We know God can," says Syble. "We know that He will. But then we are amazed at what He does sometimes so it is really complicated. But I think if it hadn't been for the prayers of the people and people visiting I would have never made it."
