SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Investigators with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office and Texas Rangers are investigating a shooting incident in Joaquin that left one man dead and another in the ICU at the LSU hospital in Shreveport.
No charges have been filed at this time, according to a press release.
Early Sunday evening, a Shelby County Sheriff's deputy responded to a residence in the 300 block of FM 139 in reference to an altercation the caller said had just occurred between John Leggett, James Leggett, Richard Sharp Sr., and Richard Sharp Jr.
Then at 1:06 p.m. Tuesday, SCSO deputies were dispatched out to the same address in reference to a shooting incident involving James Leggett, Richard Sharp, Sr. and a Richard Sharp, Jr..
When they arrive on the scene, the deputies found Richard Sharp Sr. dead in the front yard of James Leggett's home, the press release stated Richard Sharp. Jr. was found with a gunshot wound to his right leg. Richard Sharp Jr. was treated at the scene by ACE EMS and later airlifted by LifeAir Rescue to the LSU hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Further investigation revealed that James Leggett had shot both Richard Sharp Sr. and Richard Sharp Jr. at his residence. No charges have been filed at this time, according to the press release.
Two SCSO investigators and two Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting incident.
“All evidence was mapped, cataloged, and packaged for processing,” the press release stated. “[DPS] Crime Scene Team also came to the Leggett residence to map evidence.”
Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Margie Anderson pronounced Richard Sharp Sr. dead at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. Richard Sharp. Jr. was in the ICU at the LSU hospital, the press release stated.
The press release stated that a Shelby County grand jury will hear all of the evidence in the case and make a decision on whether criminal charges will be filed.
