LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - On Wednesday, the Brookshire Brothers grocery chain announced that it had entered into an agreement to sell 26 Polks Pick-It-Up Convenience stores to Partners Investors C-stores Ltd.
The Polks stores are located throughout Deep East Texas. According to a press release, Brookshire Brothers will keep its Polks Pick-It-Up locations in Hudson, Central Heights, Central, and Wells.
"We are continuously evaluating our business to ensure optimal resource utilization," said John Alston, Brookshire Brothers' chief operating officer. "Our focus is to provide an exceptional shopping experience for our customers in all of our formats, including the recently launched Brookshire Brothers Express banner."
The press release stated that the company will continue "to expand beyond its current footprint." In 2015, Brookshire Brothers will be opening stores in Hamilton, Pilot Point, and Canyon Lake.
Along those lines, Sally Alvis, a spokeswoman for Brookshire Brothers confirmed that the company has bought land at the corner of FM 228 and State Highway 287 in Grapeland.
"We did this after receiving requests for a store there," Alvis said. "After research, it is a good location for a smaller store. The project will be in the 2017 fiscal year that starts next May. We already have four stores opening up this fiscal year."
Despite the pending sale of the Polks locations, the company is doing well, Alvis said.
"We are looking at the whole company," Alvis said. "We are growing where it makes sense."
Brookshire Brothers was founded in 1921. The company is 100-percent employee owned, and its assets include retail outlets incorporating grocery stores, convenience stores, and free-standing pharmacy, tobacco, and gas station locations.
