Police Chase Ends With Road Spikes And Damaged Patrol Car

by Chris Cato

A Police chase in Lufkin Sunday morning was a wild ride that ended with a damaged police car and a man not in jail, but in a mental facility.

Police say 58-year-old John Perkins allegedly made threats to a Lufkin family. Angelina County Sheriff's Deputies caught up with Perkins and tried to pull him over for questioning, but Perkins wouldn't stop.

Lufkin Police joined the chase around the loop where, near the vicinity of Chestnut, Perkins hit a patrol car. Officers finally laid spikes in the road, forcing Perkins to stop near the 5th Wheel Truck Stop.

Perkins was taken to Woodland Heights Medical Center for mental observation. He was later transported to a facility in Tyler.

Sources tell the East Texas News that Perkins suffered from post traumatic stress disorder, a condition he acquired while serving in Vietnam. Charges against Perkins are pending a mental health review.
