LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Fifth grade students at Brandon Elementary are using their math and thinking skills to show off at the game of Bridge.
"Don't get me wrong, most people don't think math is cool, but with this game math is cool," Alex Venagas said.
The after school club is sponsored by billionaires Warren Buffet and Bill Gates. the two philanthropists started the nation side bridge program as a way to engage students and improve their critical thinking skills.
"Bridge is one of the easiest ways to get students to think critically," organizer Bobbi Robinson said. "It is hard. It's not easy, but the students take so much away from this experience. Buffet and Gates pay for everything. The school does not pay anything. it really works great for the school."
The students that play are all fifth graders and are hoping the club is picked up at the middle school level.
"It would be great to expand," Robinson said. "We want to expand. I have a few more people who said they could help. It would be great to see more students playing this game."
Avery Sullivan said the program allows him to use his math skills outside of the class room.
"I really enjoy bridge because it involves math and I really enjoy math," Sullivan said. "You get to hang out with your friends and have fun. It's really challenging."
