Nacogdoches boy in the running for international piano competition

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Antonio Ajero is a very gifted piano player, especially since he is only 10-years-old.

"I don't know if it's necessarily talent or anything, I think he's just a product of his environment, said Dr. Mario Ajero, Antonio's father and teacher.

Antonio first started getting a feel for the piano at 18-months-old under the tutelage of his father, a music professor at Stephen F. Austin University, and has continued to thrive ever since.

"We just made it a point to make it a regular part of our evening family activities and music has been a part of our lives since they were really little," Dr. Ajero said.

Dr. Ajero made it a point that Antonio's lessons included classical music, as well as contemporary pop music, to make it more fun for his son. Antonio admits he can't decide which style he likes better.

"I actually like to play both of them," said Antonio.

His training has led to him to perform very well in competitions all over the state.

Now Antonio is taking it to a whole new level, an international online contest.

"They're trying as an alternative to where you have to travel and perform for judges live, that you can upload videos of your playing since we are in this digital age," said Dr. Ajero.

Antonio has two videos in the running, one classical and one in variations, going against 5 other contestants from around the world.

"I'm very excited and very confident," Antonio said, regarding his competition.

However, he is currently in second place and needs all the votes he can get to win first prize.

"Any votes we can draw up for him here will help. He's about 200 or 300 behind," Dr. Ajero said.

Despite the outcome of the competition, Antonio will continue to play on and his hoping to follow in his father's footsteps on day.

"When I grow up, I want to become a music teacher," Antonio said.

Since Antonio has two videos in the running, he asks that people vote for his variations piece over his classical piece. His variations video has more votes and has a better chance of winning.
