SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin's Porsha Roberts has signed with the San Antonio Stars in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) as an undrafted free agent. She is just one of 15 women to crack the Stars' final 2015 training camp roster with just over two weeks until the season opener on June 5.
Roberts' pro contract comes on the heels of a standout season for the Ladyjacks in the 2014-15 season. She averaged 17.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game while shooting 63.2 percent from the field, the second-best shooting percentage in the nation. Roberts was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year after leading the Ladyjacks to a second consecutive SLC regular season title and a third postseason appearance in four years. She was also named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season in 2015 after leading the league in blocked shots and rebounds.
A 6-foot-2 center from Waco, Roberts has scattered her name all over the Ladyjack record books, ranking in the top ten in more than 10 major statistical categories. After four years, Roberts is sixth all-time at SFA with 1,915 points and 1,007 rebounds, and is the all-time leading shot-blocker with 246 career rejections.
Earlier this month, Roberts was named the June Irwin Female Athlete of the Year at the SFA Champions Dinner for her outstanding contributions on the basketball court. She leaves SFA with her place cemented as one of the best women's basketball players in program history.
The Stars tip off the 2015 season in Phoenix against the defending champion Mercury on June 5. The team's home opener takes place on June 14 at the Freeman Coliseum against the Tulsa Shock at 3:30 p.m. To follow Roberts' progress through camp, follow the Stars on Twitter (@SAStars) or go to the official team website at www.sastars.com.
