A Lufkin man is dead after a gruesome wreck Monday in Lufkin. Forty-year-old Kevin Hanks was headed south on Highway 59 when he spun out of control and went underneath a big rig. The 18-wheeler, driven by 52-year-old Michael Short of Georgia, went into a ditch and hit a tree.

Traffic slowed for hours while emergency and medical crews tried to clean up the scene. The truck leaked fuel and powdered detergent spilled from its cargo.

Trooper Ramey Bass says, "The car was headed south bound on Highway 59 and hydroplaned across the road, went airborne, and hit the 18-wheeler head on."

The driver of the big rig was taken to a hospital with incapacitating injuries.
