LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The body of missing 13-year-old Ayanna Austin was found Saturday afternoon in a creek behind Lufkin Middle School.
Ayanna was last seen Thursday morning on her way to school.
At this time, Lufkin Police believe Ayanna may have accidentally drowned. LPD Criminal Investigation detectives secured surveillance footage of the area where Ayanna was last seen and saw that she fell into a flooded ditch.
LPD was joined by Texas Task Force, the Angelina County Game Warden, Lufkin Fire Department, and members of Ayanna's family in the search for her body. Two members of the family spotted her body in the creek.
Ayanna's family said they are thankful for the LPD detectives and the community in the search for their little girl.
"The family now has closure we needed, even if it is not the closure we wanted," said Akela Austin, Ayanna's aunt.
Police believe there was no foul play involved. However, Justice of the Peace Billy Ball has ordered an autopsy. LPD's investigation will remain open until the results of the autopsy are returned.
