Powerful storms knock out utilities for thousands of East Texans

EAST TEXAS (KTRE) - Thousands of people are without power Tuesday as a line of moderate to severe storms moved through East Texas overnight.

As of 3:45 a.m., more than 18,000 homes were without power in Deep East Texas.

The company reported 5,866 customers without power in Cherokee County; 2,956 in Anderson County; 1,348 in Nacogdoches County; 476 in Angelina County; 258 in Houston County; and 113 in Rusk County. SWEPCO reported more than 7,662 customers in Rusk County were without electricity.

Current numbers for Deep East Texas Electric Co-Op were not immediately available.

Monday, the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for most of East Texas and warned of the potential for severe flooding.
