The Center Roughriders are doing whatever it takes to keep their season alive, as they enter the regional semifinals.
Coming in with a solid 24-3 record, they got Huffman who's not only ranked No. 2 in the state, but is also coming into this regional semifinal with an impressive 23-4 record.
Center has seen a lot of good baseball this season, and has an experienced group of seniors leading the pack including TCU commit Dalton Horton. The team expects this game to be their toughest yet, but also said they see a lot of themselves in Huffman.
“Coach Sheppard's told us it's kind of like looking in a mirror to ourselves. They play good defense, play the ball well, and they've got good pitching, but so do the Center Riders,” said shortstop Josh Burnes.
There's also been a lot of speculation that the winner of this series will be a serious contender to win state.
“I feel like we're two of the best teams in the state. I feel like if we win, we'll come out and compete for the state championship to win it all,” said Horton.
“This group that we have right now that are seniors, they've won 62 games since I've been here the last three years,” said head coach David Sheppard. “We have a lot of experience under our belt and like I said, I'm not afraid to play anybody.”
Center will play a best-of-three-game series all at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Game one will be Thursday starting at 6: 30 p.m. The series will resume Saturday with game two starting at 1:00 p.m. and then game three, if necessary, will start right after game two.
