LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - After a nearly two-week delay, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has replaced the knock-down traffic light at the busy intersection of FM 819 (College Drive) and US Highway 59 South.

TxDOT employees and a subcontracted light installation company spent nearly all day Wednesday repair the intersection.

On Friday, May 15, an 18-wheeler, involved in a three-car accident, jackknifed into the light pole knocking it down and disrupting the traffic signal system. That trailer not only pushed down the pole, but also uprooted some of its concrete foundation.

A TxDOT representative said its plan to quickly repair the signal and light was delayed for two main reasons: it had to special order parts for the pole and light; and the recent bad weather delayed their ability to go onsite.

By late Wednesday, contractors had installed the traffic light. They had the night light installed before sunset.

Since the traffic pattern has changed, TxDOT is urging motorists to use caution approaching the intersection during the next several days.
