Crockett denied funding for National Guard Challenge Academy

CROCKETT, TX (KTRE) -

It is back to the drawing board for county and city officials in Crockett.

County Judge Erin Ford confirmed that the state was unable to fund a Texas National Guard Challenge Academy in Crockett. Ford and the city were hoping the funding would be the youth alternative program to the old state school building.

"We were funding one site already," State representative Trent Ashby said. "It was a big ask, but me and Senator Robert Nichols tried as hard as we could to get it done."

Ford said they were third on the list, but the state was only able to fund two other sites.

"We will keep working to look at other avenues where we can utilize the facility," Ford said. "We are hoping the Texas National Guard will continue to be interested and sometime in the future we will have the funding."

Ford said the group has also talked to the state health department about the facility but has not heard back yet.
